Summer Program at Brighton Ballet Theater/American School of Russian Ballet

Experience the fun and excitement of dancing on the shore of Manhattan Beach during the summer of 2024.

BBT welcomes students of all genders, races, ethnicities, languages, religions, and backgrounds. Classes will be held on the campus of Kingsborough Community College.

All potential and current students need to register anew with BBT every academic year and each summer, as well as any time there is a change in personal information (such as an address, phone, guardianship, etc.). We must have up-to-date information on each student in case of emergency and also for the efficiency and accuracy of our class rosters and billing system.

We also ask that students and parents read carefully and re-submit a signed Registration Package (including Application, Policy Statement, Code of Conduct, and Photo/Video Release) each year because these documents are subject to change and include important notices about health and safety policies, refunds, scheduling changes, fees and the like.

Guidelines for new applicants and returning students:

Submit a completed Registration Package, including signed Application, Policy Statement, Code of Conduct, and Photo/Video Release (you may download and print PDFs of the forms available at the left side of this page, to submit online, in-person or by mail)

Pay the non-refundable annual registration fee (separate from the fall/spring registration fee) of $35 in-person or by mail to:

What Makes the Brighton Ballet Theater Summer Program Special?
We are an affordable, family-friendly dance school that offers a fully-customizable summer schedule, "Dance A La Carte," so that students can start and stop at any time without being locked into a 4- or 6-week commitment, unlike most programs. You choose how many classes per week for as many or as few weeks as you wish, with a two-week "Summer Intensive" available for pre-professional and professional dancers. Brighton Ballet Theater invites exceptional guest instructors from the US and worldwide to lead classes in the Summer Intensive.
Furthermore, students have access to the best teachers in New York, with training in the Vaganova method and American teaching experience; all Brighton Ballet Theater instructors also offer small group (boutique) and individual lessons tailored to students' needs. All levels are welcome to enroll in the Dance A La Carte program. Early registration is essential for the Summer Intensive program, and placements are determined by audition (or trial class). Placements are based on a combination of experience, ability, and age.

Why is Summer Dance Instruction Important for Your Child?
Summertime is the most relaxed time for students when they are free to focus on physical activities. It naturally creates an openness to trying new things, letting go of stresses and anxieties that may have been impeding their advancement during the school year, and undertaking more strenuous or challenging classes. It is a perfect time to study with a different teacher, learn more advanced techniques, and try to progress to the next level. Instructors, likewise, have more time and opportunity during the summer to arrange private lessons for students who request individual assistance in reaching specific personal goals. It may mean preparing for junior and high school talent auditions, creating dance programs for upcoming competitions, or working with athletes who seek the benefits of ballet in the areas of flexibility, strength, balance, grace, and musicality. Brighton Ballet Theater accommodates a wide range of student requests during the summer.

Why should my child take summer classes with Brighton Ballet Theater?

Summer classes at Brighton Ballet Theater are small and offer even more personal attention than our academic year classes.
Additionally, children can train at a higher level than during the academic year because they are not preparing for a performance; many advances to a whole level in summer. The summer curriculum for each level is tailored to the participating students' needs so that they can work on areas that concern them or interest them most. Our evening schedule is also very convenient as it can be combined with a child's regular daytime or camp activities. Unlike many other summer dance programs, children do not need to stay overnight away from home.

How do scheduling and payment work during the summer?
We understand that many families travel and balance multiple commitments during the summer, so we are very flexible. While group classes occur in the evenings and on Sundays, there may be opportunities for private or boutique (semi-private) lessons during the day, depending on instructors' availability. Families pay weekly (instead of four-week installments or the whole summer), so students can stop/start anytime if they are going away for vacation. You will also find that our summer classes are very affordable in comparison to other summer programs.
Who are the teachers in the Brighton Ballet Theater Summer programs?
Our regular faculty teach during the summer, and we host several exceptional guest instructors from renowned dance academies, ballet companies, and choreographic institutes each summer.

For students with busy daytime commitments and hectic summer weekends, our À la Carte option is the perfect way to start or continue serious dance training on a flexible schedule tailored to your needs. Students may choose as many classes per week, for as many weeks as desired, during our 8-week summer session.

Classes include the ballet-Vaganova method at all levels, variation class, pointe technique, and character dance. Modern and contemporary classes include the Horton and Martha Graham Technique, Jazz Dance, improvisation class, and Ballroom dance. Pre-ballet, Rhythmic dance, music appreciation, rhythmic gym.

BBT will offer this program from Sunday, July 9- Sunday, August 13

These sessions are geared for rising 5th graders who are preparing for middle school programs, another for 8th graders preparing for high school auditions and the last is for 11th and 12th graders who may be preparing for college programs, dance companies, or solo roles in mainstage performances.

The BBT curriculum will include Dance Improvisation, Martha Graham and Horton techniques, Ballet technique, and Variation class, and will also include personalized choreography (a requirement for most auditions) and rehearsals as well as application guidance, portrait photography, sound and music preparation, vocabulary review and practice of all required positions. Group size will be capped at 12 students per session. Importantly, the limited size of the program will allow for individualized attention and personal coaching.

Dance Audition Preparation for Specialty Schools: Mark Twain I.S. 239 for the Gifted & Talented; I.S. 98 Bay Academy; Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and even more.

This intensive program of classical ballet in the Russian (Vaganova Method) tradition is open to serious dancers from 9-18 years old. In this special two -weeks intensive, BBT offers its signature small-group instruction led by master pedagogues, including guest faculty such as the renowned choreographer and teacher, and a graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy Liudmila Polonskaya. The program is designed for young dancers who seek individualized attention and advance both their technical and artistic skills. Each week includes 25 hours of classes such as Classical ballet (Vaganova Method, Pointe, Character Dance, Variation, etc.). By developing a more harmonious system of movement and broadening their expressive range, students will end the summer more confident and prepared to tackle complex repertoire.

The summer classes for younger kids ages 6-8 with dance experience will be from

10 am- -1 pm, They will run for 2 weeks, 5 days a week. The curriculum will include floor barre exercises, basic ballet technique, improvisation class, and acting. All classes are designed by the faculty of BBT and supervised by our artistic director and main choreographer Edouard Kouchnarev.

His students are the youngest participants in the YAGP ballet competition.

They learn and dance full choreographic pisses. By special methodology, at a young age, they are not afraid to be on stage, their students feel confident and they act and dance like professional dancers.
